SUNDAY IN THE CITY

Episode 4

With Daniella Bumb,
English language consultant
specialising in wine and luxury
, Bordeaux, France

She first came to France at seventeen. Settled at thirty,
after more back-and-forths than she can count.

Transylvanian by roots, Swedish by passport, French by now;
and increasingly Swedish again by her own admission.

She teaches professional English to the next generation of luxury and hospitality professionals, which means she has spent her career navigating the intercultural.

One of the first people I met when I arrived in Bordeaux,
which tells you something about the kind of city it is.
She speaks more languages than she mentions.

Which city took you the longest to understand?

Venice. I was young, amazed, and a little lost. Venice is a labyrinth.

Where do you go when you need to disappear for a while?

Cumbria, the Lake District. I felt like a ghost in the landscape and managed to disconnect completely.

Which city disappointed you at first, and why did you return anyway?

Bucharest. I still haven't found my way in. But I would like to explore more, despite everything.

When someone you care about is going through a difficult time, where do you send them?

Roma. The eternal city.

Which city makes you want to be more elegant?

Bordeaux, always. And perhaps Milano as well.

An address you would share with someone you are attracted to?

Café Sacher in Vienna, or the New York Café in Budapest.
