SUNDAY IN THE CITY
Episode 5
With Fred Mann
Art dealer and gallerist,
London / Marrakesh
I was lucky enough to live in London in the nineties
when Fred Mann opened his first gallery in the East End.
Fred founded New Art Projects in 2005,
one of the more vital contemporary galleries in London.
He is now opening a series of luxury period houses,
starting with Riad Sahir - House of the Magician -
a restored ancient riad in Marrakesh.
Which city took you the longest to understand?
Marrakesh. Each time you go, something new is revealed. Cities at the heart of trade routes are melting pots of people, culture, taste and smell.
Where do you go when you need to disappear for a while?
Fez. It is a city that looks in on itself, the spiritual home of the people of the country. It has a peace and a centre to it.
Which city disappointed you at first,
and why did you return anyway?
Brighton. It behaves like a huge place but it's actually a village, and sometimes feels empty for it.
When someone you care about is going
through a difficult time, where do you send them?
Into my arms.
Which city makes you want to be more elegant?
Paris. They have a more stylish version of everything there.
An address you would share
with someone you are attracted to?
Ayasuluk Hill, outside Selçuk in Turkey. From the top, you can see three whole cultures and religions at once. There is nowhere quite like it.
